Summary

Nick Henner supported implementation of an educational “Green Wall” showcasing sustainability initiatives, conducted Energy Management Network surveys and improved the Network Energy Training for BSC.

Goals

Boston Scientific Corporation (BSC), a leading manufacturer and developer of medical devices, enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Nick Henner to support its Global Energy Management System (GEMS). Building off the work of a previous fellow, BSC sought help with developing educational material about its sustainability initiatives, improving its Energy Management Maturity Model and enhancing Network training.

Solutions

After coordinating with a cross-functioning group of professionals, Nick supported the implementation of a “Green Wall” to help educate BSC stakeholders on sustainability initiatives, particularly around energy management. He planned the physical design, as well as a theme, that includes a constant landing page with highlights of the high-level information from the BSC Global Sustainability Report. Nick also provided feedback for the development of six global Key Performance Indicators, which will be displayed on the wall’s dashboard feature. It will showcase a selection of energy management projects from the 15 global operating facilities and will highlight their quantitative and qualitative attributes.

Nick also carried out energy management surveys with site managers from all BSC global operating facilities. He analyzed the results in order to benchmark the progress of each facility over the past year. A SWOT analysis was performed for each facility, which can be used as references when setting 2017 goals and action plans. Working with the BSC Global Energy Manager, Nick gave suggestions to improve communication and accessibility of BSC’s Energy Network Training.

Potential Impact

Nick’s work will contribute to the development of BSC’s Energy Management Maturity Model. His analysis and recommendations, which were presented to BSC stakeholders at the Global Facilities Summit, will influence decisions to expand investment and commitments for prioritizing additional energy efficiency initiatives and practices.
