Summary

Olalekan Ogundairo helped NYDCAS roadmap a 2040 sustainability goal by improving their operational performance across the EVs infrastructure (Vehicles and Charging stations) and developing models.

Goals

New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (NYDCAS) manages the largest municipal fleet in the US and is a major driver for sustainability with respect to electrification. NYDCAS has over 30,000 vehicles ranging from different classes of vehicles and engine types (fuel, battery, hybrid). Olalekan worked on a couple of projects:

  1. A publishable report on the actual vs expected MPGe for 600 battery-only vehicles.
  2. Analyzed 1400 fuel engine vehicles, for repowering projects, engage vendors, and make recommendations.
  3. Analyzed 460 existing charging stations, developed a report to improve operational efficiency and growth planning.
  4. Market Research and Vendor Engagement on Charging Station infrastructure to meet rising demands with security, reliability, and resiliency (SRR) for charging EVs.
  5. Developed a map-like model/ tool, that can help EVs operate for charging stations distance and duration of charging.

Solutions

  1. Obtained MPGe data for each of the 600 battery-only vehicles as stated by manufacturer, simulated EV monitoring platform (GEOTAB) used by NYDCAS to obtain the actual MPGe of the vehicles. Assisted with comparison analysis which will lead to a public report document.
  2. Analyzed 1400 fuel engine vehicles and made a recommendation on efficiency to determine the vehicles to be repowered first and to satisfy potential NYSERDA funding requirements. The project will reduce the carbon emission of all the vehicles by 23,069,196 lbs. He researched and engaged five vendors in the business of repowering to assist NYDCAS with the project.
  3. Analyzed all NYDCAS existing charging stations and performed a data analysis technique “Unsupervised” learning to cluster the stations and help determine how their charging stations are performing. The report provided NYDCAS with recommendations on which charging stations should be upgraded based on the YTD operational analysis and clustering and let them know which stations are underutilized.
  4. Researched the key areas where SRR can be compromised in the architecture and created a report which includes impacts of the occurrence. He further engaged 20 different vendors (Hardware and Software providers), to see who can address the SRR concerns relating to cyber-security, manual override.
  5. Developed an EV analytics model for NYDCAS to manage and operate their fleets of Electric vehicles. The tool can help NYDCAS vehicles to determine the optimum charging station with respect to distance and duration of charging.

Potential Impact

  1. Analysis helps EV manufacturers to know the economic performance of the vehicle and the vehicle can know the expected performance.
  2. The Repowering project will help NYDCAS translate their ICE vehicles to battery which will reduce GHG emissions by 23,069,196lbs.
  3. The Repowering Charging station reports will help NYDCAS to operate their fleets excellently and provide efficient charging services. Also, underperforming charging stations are recognized and frequently utilized stations are recommended to be upgraded when necessary.
  4. The EVSE project will help avert disruption that can be experienced in the charging station network especially tied to emergency response and critical staff whose vehicles are currently electrified.
  5. The Analytics model will help EV owners to make better decisions regarding their vehicle operation and it can be connected to the GEOTAB API.
