Goals
In April 2021, Indeed set an ambitious goal to reach net-zero emissions at a lightning-fast pace by 2030. Indeed recognizes the environmental and business risks associated with climate change, and decided to tackle the problem head-on. It hired its first-ever Environmental Sustainability lead and formed an ESG function, under Group VP LaFawn Davis, to drive accountability across the organization. To help with the strategy, Indeed enlisted Michael Di Paolo to study best practices and plan for a resilient pathway to net-zero emissions across Scope 1, 2, and 3.
Solutions
Michael Di Paolo approached the challenge using a multi-faceted approach:
- Identify goals and measures for success for how a net-zero strategy can support broader ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) goals at Indeed.
- Understand the current landscape of Indeed’s sustainability progress in order to identify next steps in the data gathering process. By taking a deep-dive into Indeed’s resources, like its 3rd-party verified 2019 greenhouse gas emissions inventory, utility data, and employee survey results, Michael was able to identify key areas to focus on for next steps.
- Develop and establish a hierarchy of solutions for each of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions that factors in estimated reduction of emissions, cost, feasibility, and practicality. Through flowcharts and mind-maps, Michael created a method by which Indeed can map out an effective, cost-conscious, and flexible way to reduce emissions across their global operations including energy audits, sub-metering installation, and energy efficiency measures such as Energy Star rated appliances.
Potential Impact
Using a mix of established best practices and innovative approaches, Indeed can achieve net-zero emissions by eliminating emissions across Scope 1, 2, and 3 annually. As a result of this reduction in emissions, Indeed can solidify its position as a sustainability leader, and garner both environmental and business-related benefits.
