Goals
Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd. (MLDL), one of the first real estate companies in India committed to the global SBTi and C40 cities climate positive roadmap, enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Ayushi Agrawal to help the organization to reach a circular built environment through maximizing material resource efficiency and Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL) in construction and use phase. MLDL wants to follow efficient processes to meet commitment of reduction in absolute 20% scope 3 GHG emissions.
Solutions
Ayushi analyzed construction material consumption and waste data collected using corporate sustainability software and highlighted challenges in calculating conversion efficiency. She suggested strategies for calculating and reducing embodied carbon, engaging supply chain through master specification at RFP stage, and on-site resource optimization to reach maximum resource efficiency. She analyzed and used construction waste mix for prioritizing strategies and developing C&D waste SOP.
Realizing system challenges, Ayushi defined the Occupancy phase waste management planning process from design to engagement phase and revised SOP. To better manage environmental and economic performance, she defined evaluation matrix, and built tools for waste quantification, emission accounting, and solution evaluation to measure resource recovery cost benefits and take investment decisions for IC&IC and occupancy phase waste.
Potential Impact
Ayushi has worked on ZWL business cases for Integrated Cities & Industrial Cluster (IC&IC) and Multifamily home in Bangalore, which estimates a 991 metric ton CO2e annual GHG reduction and 18,70,316 kg of waste which is 90% diversion away from landfill annually. The power generation through biogas plant installation at IC&IC in long-term will suffice at least 79,123 KWh of electricity requirement annually. Moving towards circular economy, reducing embodied carbon, and maximizing resource efficiency through recommended strategies will help MLDL meet 20% absolute reduction in scope 3 emissions and ZWL commitments.
