Summary

Maria Pia Panero worked with Resource Label Group to develop a sustainability program and reporting framework for Environmental, Social and Governance standards.

Goals

Resource Label Group (RLG) is a multinational manufacturer of product packaging and labeling technologies. RLG enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Maria Pia Panero to develop a sustainability program and sustainability framework that would inform ESG reporting criteria to reduce their carbon footprint, resources used and create additional value to its full range of stakeholders.

Solutions

Panero researched in the industry standards by conducting several interviews with suppliers and customers to assess the facilities across RLG’s portfolio. Pia worked with the Director of Marketing to evaluate global sustainability reporting standards and recommended the ESG reporting framework for RLG. Panero presented recommendations on key procedures and policies for the Carbon Disclosure Project and Ecovadis survey framework.

Turning her attention to setting targets and initiatives that would inform the ESG reports she collected information from all the facilities to create a 2018 baseline. After analyzing this data, she presented a list of unique actions including: reducing energy use, GHG emissions, water, air and waste. She then created a consolidated Sustainability Product Portfolio which created a path way for RLG to leverage sustainability products and added value for its customers.

Potential Impact

This project set RLG on a path to implement a suite of sustainability strategies to enhance their business reputation. Panero’s analysis helped RLG understand what ESG criteria was relevant for stakeholders and changes in culture, mindset, process, team, and operations were needed in order to have a positive impact. Panero helped to prioritize initiatives in operations and identified available resources to implement the sustainability program to provide positive business and environmental benefits. Those benefits include creating additional value for its stakeholders, enhanced reputation, value chain, emissions reductions, and making a positive impact on the environment.
