Summary

Affuembey identified multiple energy saving initiatives, among them lighting improvements and water waste reduction.

Goals

Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, La. asked Affuembey to help them improve energy efficiency at eight buildings.

Solutions

Affuembey Enow Affuembey identified six projects to improve the energy efficiency. Currently, in five buildings that receive ample daylight, the lights are left on 24/7. Affuembey recommended installing lighting timers that will turn those lights off when they aren't needed. He also recommended replacing incandescent exit-sign lights with light-emitting diodes (LEDs); installing automatic shut-off devices on cold vending machines; adjusting toilet fixtures to reduce water per flush; and consolidating printers between departments, reducing the printer-to-office ratio from one-to-one to one-to-ten.

Potential Impact

If Southern A&M chooses to invest in these projects, it could save more than $270,000 over ten years. It would also reduce electricity use by 130,000 kilowatt hours and prevent the emission of 85 tons of carbon dioxide annually.
