Summary

Kamsi Azike evaluated and created a business intelligence platform to monitor and help mitigate Volvo Trucks New River Valley Assembly Operations (NRV) CO2 emissions.

Goals

Volvo Group is exploring strategies and opportunities to support greenhouse gas emissions’ reduction goals to align with their commitment to the Paris Agreement towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The Volvo Group brought on Kamsi Azike to assess the current CO2 emission footprint of the NRV campus and recommend actions to improve accuracy in measurement and calculations. He was also tasked to create business intelligence reports using Microsoft power BI for the usage of operators and stakeholders to make efficient decisions when it comes to mitigating CO2 emissions.

Solutions

Kamsi approached the challenge in three stages:

  • Survey of the natural gas-fired equipment at the plant for extensive data collection and knowledge of the manufacturing processes and equipment;
  • Review utility documents and database, gathering the necessary information and data to be streamlined in a separate spreadsheet for the business intelligence report; and
  • Create a business intelligence platform, using information gathered to calculate site’s annual CO2 emissions from each piece of natural gas-fired equipment using GHG protocol standard method, nameplate capacity, and load at which they operate. This platform will deliver critical insights to determine the areas of improvement and manage/mitigate their CO2 emissions going forward when connected with a data acquisition platform.

Potential Impact

With this research and the creation of the business intelligence platform, the Volvo Trucks NRV Assembly Operations can see a distinct overview of their CO2 emissions. This work will help the Volvo Group achieve its commitment to the Paris Agreement by facilitating evaluation and monitoring of the site’s CO2 emissions for efficient decision making towards cost/energy savings and CO2 reduction actions. This project will be fully autonomous using the business intelligence platform from the project when Volvo North America moves forward with the recommendations.
