Summary

Ang Xuan developed a practical code package tool for Walmart (China) to assist with low-carbon store planning and load scenario generation/reduction.

Goals

Walmart is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040. With this ambitious goal in mind, investment in low carbon planning and day-to-day operations of more than 300 stores in China, is critical to achieving the carbon neutrality target. In view of this, Ang Xuan investigated the common carbon abatement techniques currently in use, and developed a generic low-carbon store planning code package for Walmart.

Solutions

Ang developed an exact Gaussian regression model of electricity consumption and local air temperature on the basis of available data. He also investigated current carbon abatement technologies and devices and their costs, and understood their external characteristics and modeling method. Ang programmed a code package for planning and designing multi-energy complementary low-carbon stores: the plan included 11 optional devices including CCHP, gas boilers, electric boilers, central cooling, absorption cooling, heat pumps, wind/PV power, and electricity/heat/cooling storage units.

Outputs included: various equipment selections, annual construction costs, new energy subsidies, carbon trading costs, and total costs.

Potential Impact

Walmart is committed to achieving its global carbon neutrality target by 2040, 20 years ahead of that proposed by the Chinese government. Ang Xuan's work was related to decarbonisation pathways. Firstly, he accurately analyzed the correlation between electricity consumption and local temperatures. Secondly, he investigated the application of various low-carbon technologies and equipment in China. Finally, he delivered a code package for low-carbon store planning and load scenario generation/reduction.
