Summary
Joe Nyangon developed a tool for franchise properties to compare and evaluate energy and water use.
Goals
Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, Inc. is committed to finding innovative ways to achieve a 30 percent reduction in energy and a 20 percent reduction in water consumption per built hotel room by 2020, what it calls its “30/20 by 20” goals. In 2013, Starwood added an additional goal to reduce carbon emissions by 30 percent during the same timeframe. To realize these sustainability goals, Starwood is implementing foundational efficiency measures, capital expenditures and product as well as technology innovation, to continually improve wide-ranging operational and behavioral practices that make economic sense and conserve natural resources. In addition, Starwood enlisted the help of EDF Climate Corps fellow, Joe Nyangon to create a tool to analyze energy and water use at its many properties.
Solutions
Over a period of ten weeks, Nyangon developed a performance measurement tool utilizing regression analysis of energy and water related multi-variables, which is scheduled to be migrated later this year to a Starwood intranet site for performance measurement and forecasting. This tool shows the business case of reducing energy and water consumption and expedites the decision process for engineering leadership. The multi-variables analyzed included climate variability (degree days), occupancy rates, occupants’ behavior (e.g. participation in Starwood’s Make a Green Choice program) and existing energy services.
Potential Impact
Using a representative sample of five properties, the estimated financial savings due to expedited decision making through the performance measurement framework amounted to an average of $20,297 per year from 2016 to 2020, per property.
