Summary

Leonardo Araujo calculated carbon inventories and devised decarbonization strategies for Alpine Investors, advancing their climate agenda.

Goals

Alpine Investors is a private equity firm headquartered in San Francisco with $17B in AUM and 600+ lifetime investments, particularly in software and service businesses. As part of its commitment to being a force for good in the world, and in response to investors' demand for insightful and actionable climate data, Alpine recruited Leonardo Araujo to calculate the first carbon inventory of a portfolio company, assess potential decarbonization strategies, and calculate the management company's inventory for 2023.

Solutions

Leonardo worked closely with the portfolio company to explain the process, the reasons behind the project, and the data that would be needed. He then conducted several analyses and processed data to fill gaps and calculate GHG emissions. Leonardo concluded that the company's biggest emissions source is its fleet, so he built an electrification toolkit to support the company in deciding whether and how to pursue an electrification project. Additionally, Leonardo engaged with several internal and external stakeholders within Alpine to collect data and calculate the management company's 2023 carbon inventory, including several scope 3 categories. He analyzed the results and recommended several decarbonization strategies for the company.

Potential Impact

Leonardo's work with the portfolio company was the first of its kind within Alpine and will set the stage for future engagements with other portfolio companies, eventually enabling Alpine to calculate its financed emissions and promote a decarbonization agenda across the portfolio. Within the management company, Leonardo's recommendations on decarbonization strategies have the potential to reduce 480 Mt CO2e in yearly emissions, further advancing Alpine's climate agenda.
