Summary
Dhruv Jhaveri coordinated with facilities managers at Amazon Robotics offices/manufacturing/lab spaces in the Boston area to identify Scope 1 and 2 emissions sources and prioritize opportunities to reduce carbon emissions.
Goals
Amazon co-founded the Climate Pledge - a commitment to be net zero carbon by 2040 - 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. EDF Climate Corps Fellow Dhruv Jhaveri was enlisted by Amazon Robotics to identify, evaluate, and prioritize Scope 1 and 2 emissions reduction opportunities.
Solutions
Dhruv conducted an energy audit of Amazon Robotics facilities – identifying and calculating energy sources and consumption details. He collaborated with facilities, manufacturing, and R&D managers to measure equipment, HVAC, lighting, and plug-in load details. Using the energy audit, he calculated emissions from the various spaces of the building and included non-energy sources (e.g., leaked refrigerants). Through his audits he prioritized Scope 1 and 2 emission reduction opportunities across dimensions of cost, emissions reduction potential, and return on investment.
Potential Impact
By executing what Dhruv identified as “low hanging fruits” (low cost, high impact), there is a potential to reduce carbon emissions by 20% at Amazon Robotics facilities in the Boston area.
