Summary

Hafiz Muhammad Taimoor Khalid engaged with Applied Systems to measure the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the company’s operations and select business activities in the US in the 2022 calendar year.

Goals

Hafiz was tasked with calculating a carbon footprint for Applied using methodologies consistent with the GHG Protocol, providing a recommended emissions reduction target, and suggesting mitigation tactics. He was specifically requested to calculate GHG emissions related to Scope 1 (Natural Gas), Scope 2 (Electricity) and Scope 3 Category 1 (Purchased Goods and Services) and Scope 3 Category 6 (Business Travel).

Solutions

The report he worked on described the process for calculating Applied Systems’ 2022 GHG Inventory– including the steps taken to collect data inputs, establish the reporting boundaries, and make key assumptions and estimations. It also included the Global Warming Potentials (GWP) used to calculate the reported emissions, recommended emissions reduction targets in line with the Science Based Targets Initiative, and innovative suggestions for Applied Systems to reduce its GHG emissions across its operations and select business activities. He used Excel to calculate the Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 Category 6 emissions and a tool provided by H&F to calculate emissions related to Scope 3 Category 1.

Potential Impact

The final report can also serve as a foundation for an Inventory Management Plan (IMP), which is used as an internal document intended to provide companies with both an understanding of and a documented record on the steps taken in the GHG inventory process, including emissions sources that were used to create the inventory, the details of the calculations, and next steps for future inventories.
