Summary

Shireen supported the completion of the financed emissions footprint, developed a dashboard to provide insights into financed emissions data, analyzed corporate GHG emissions, refined the Decarbonization Playbook, and identified assets to prioritize for decarbonization.

Goals

Ares Management is one of the largest global alternative asset managers serving many of the world's most prominent investors. As an ESG leader, Ares was developing and launching the Ares Climate Transition Program, an initiative that seeks to engage Ares' $400 billion+ investment portfolio on emissions measurement and decarbonization. Shireen's primary mandate was to contribute to the successful launch of this program and the secondary mandate was to support other climate-related activities.

Solutions

Shireen collaborated with Ares' Climate Strategy Lead and the ESG team to support the Ares Climate Transition Program. She contributed by calculating financed emissions for real estate, developing a dashboard to identify assets with higher emissions, and categorizing them based on criteria for hard-to-abate sectors. Drawing on historical data, she evaluated trends in corporate GHG emissions and suggested process improvements for future emissions measurement. Additionally, Shireen created a new module for Ares' Decarbonization Playbook to guide building owners and tenants in reducing their emissions.

Potential Impact

Shireen used a process that ensures a strategic and data-driven approach to achieving the program's goals. The ESG team has an actionable set of materials that can drive scalable engagement within Ares' portfolio around decarbonization, including analytical tools that provide insights into the portfolio, identification of the top emitters to focus on, and an enhanced Decarbonization Playbook to help building owner and tenants reduce their emissions.
