Summary
Mayank Saraswat supported CA Technologies’ global mission to improve its environmental performance by improving its energy efficiency.
Goals
CA Technologies (CA), a software and services company, is committed to advancing environmental sustainability. In 2017, CA announced a renewed carbon reduction goal - achieving 40% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, from a 2015 baseline - after achieving their previous carbon reduction goal five years ahead of schedule. EDF Climate Corps fellow Mayank Saraswat was enlisted to examine energy efficiency opportunities at CA's India location, focusing in particular on Scope 2 (electricity) consumption and emissions.
Solutions
Saraswat virtually audited the Hyderabad facility via voice and video calls, unearthing several energy savings opportunities. He focused his attention on low-cost recommendations, which allowed him to eliminate any financial barriers for implementation. This approach helped him optimize the existing energy intensive UPS and HVAC system, while making changes to the billing structure at no upfront cost. Saraswat also looked into upgrading existing CFLs with LEDs to increase the potential energy savings.
Potential Impact
Over the time, Saraswat’s recommendations could help CA save $180 thousand annually in energy costs, reduce annual energy consumption by almost 1.3 million kWh and avoid over 1,000 Metric Tons of carbon dioxide emissions. With these proposals, CA can potentially reduce their global emissions by 2% and advance their sustainability goals.
