Summary
Amir Javad Khaleghi helped Cabot Corporation reduce energy and wastewater treatment costs.
Goals
Amir Javad Khaleghi was hired to work with Cabot Inkjet Colorants in Haverhill, MA, to identify energy saving opportunities in the facility’s lighting, HVAC and process chilled water systems. In addition to energy savings, Khaleghi was asked to explore avenues to reduce the volume of the plant’s process waste water. Cabot hoped to reduce its energy and wastewater treatment costs, and, as a Responsible Care 14001 facility, cut the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from its operations.
Solutions
Khaleghi identified several projects in the facility’s production, warehouse and office spaces to help Cabot progress towards its goals: reevaluating the lighting needs of different functional spaces based on the types of activities done in those spaces, replacing the existing metal halide lamps in production floors with more efficient alternatives such as high-output T5 fluorescent lamps or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and optimizing process chiller systems through adding variable speed drives. Khaleghi also proposed adding a waste water evaporation and distillation unit to the existing waste water treatment process to reduce the volume of the plant’s waste water and improve water recovery.
Potential Impact
The identified projects could potentially save the facility over $450,000 in annual operating costs and cut more than 470,000 kilowatt hours in energy consumption and 240 metric tons of carbon emissions.
