Summary
Bridget evaluated climate policy impacts to support risk assessment, climate advocacy and strategy development for meeting Chemours’ climate targets.
Goals
Chemours operates manufacturing sites in eight countries which fall under a growing number of regulatory and carbon pricing schemes. Chemours hired Bridget to develop systems to support compliance with existing requirements and anticipate emerging regulations and voluntary reporting schemes.
Solutions
- Identified active and emerging carbon pricing schemes in Chemours areas of operations; developed a database including details on scope 1 and 2 emissions covered; anticipated compliance costs, allowances, and timeline for any planned revisions (including annual cap reduction and benchmark adjustments for ETS).
- Developed country and site-specific footprint cost estimates based on business as usual and a more ambitious (1.5 degree) climate policy scenario.
- Summarized relevant climate policy trends, including expected timeline, risk exposure, and details on projected costs and examples of peer response.
- Recommended updates to internal carbon pricing plans.
Potential Impact
Bridget’s analysis provides a foundation for stronger TCFD compliance and will feed into global advocacy work and climate strategy. The site-specific cost scenarios will support stronger business cases for renewable investments and inform strategies for reaching GHG reduction goals on a site, country, and company level. The carbon pricing and climate policy trends will be the foundational analysis for a larger transition risk assessment project in 2022.
