Summary

Mohamed worked with the Mayor's Office of Sustainability and the Department of Public Works at the City of Cleveland, to support the City's municipal fleet electrification efforts. He provided strategic recommendations, such as transitioning older Medium and Heavy-Duty (MHD) fleet vehicles to electric alternatives, as well as a simplified fleet-planning tool for managers to assess the viability of these EV options.

Goals

The primary goal was to analyze the MHD fleet for the city's operations and formulate an electrification strategy for both on-road and off-road equipment. This summer fellowship work will help inform setting revised emission reduction targets and strategies for the near-term and long-term, during the ongoing Municipal Climate Action Plan (MAP) updates, scheduled for Fall 2024.

Solutions

1. Conducted a comprehensive fleet analysis, identifying opportunities for emissions reduction within the city's operations. 2. Engaged with fleet managers and operators to address concerns regarding EV adoption. 3. Developed a customized fleet-planning tool using AFLEET and DRVE models to evaluate the financial and operational viability of electric vehicle alternatives. 4. Proposed workshops and training sessions focused on EV safety, charging infrastructure, and maintenance.

Potential Impact

1. Potential reduction of annual transportation emissions by 4.3%, if older MHD vehicles (especially those beyond industry average useful life) are replaced with EVs. 2. Equipping city officials with data-driven insights and fleet planning tools for informed decision-making on vehicle procurement and sustainability initiatives. 3. Creation of new jobs in EV maintenance and fleet management, supporting local economic growth. 4. Improved air quality, particularly in underserved communities, by reducing diesel emissions. 5. Demonstrate leadership by example with the City's MHD fleet electrification proposals
