Summary
Abhay Nagory worked with the City of Seattle to develop a Resource Conservation Management Plan and meet the city’s energy reduction goals.
Goals
Abhay Nagory was hired by City of Seattle's Office of Sustainability and Environment to develop the Resource Conservation Management Plan. The plan contributes to Seattle's goal of reducing the energy consumption of its 1000 buildings 20 percent by 2020.
Solutions
To accomplish this, Nagory compiled energy use metrics and building characteristics for 24 branch libraries. This information was used to benchmark the energy use of these facilities, compare their energy performance and compare patron energy use to scheduled operational hours. Nagory also modeled and analyzed the energy use of two Seattle fire stations.
Potential Impact
Nagory’s library data will ultimately help to identify facilities as candidates for further assessment and energy conservation. At the fire stations, Nagory’s recommendations could save the city $4,000, 60,000 kilowatt hours of energy and over 1.25 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year.
