Summary
Alan Sam with the mentoring of CivicDataLab engaged in enhancing a process for Ahmedabad's monsoon preparedness through data-driven analysis and strategic recommendations for Smart City Ahmedabad Development Ltd.
Goals
Alan Sam was selected as an EDF Climate Corps fellow to work with Civic Data Labs (CDL), where he focused on data-driven practices enhancing the resilience and efficiency of Ahmedabad's municipal services. His primary goal was to engage with the Smart City Ahmedabad Development Ltd (SCADL) as the primary stakeholder in understanding and writing recommendations in the monsoon preparedness strategies and improving its citizen grievance redressal systems. By engaging in dialogues for leveraging data-driven insights, Sam aimed to engage with stakeholders on how to address the challenges posed by the monsoon season, ensuring better service delivery and resource allocation.
Solutions
To achieve these goals, Alan Sam conducted a comprehensive analysis of almost 1 Million citizen complaints from the 2023 - 2024 season. He used tools like Superset to visualize and categorize the complaints, identifying key pain points and regions that required immediate attention. Sam also engaged with stakeholders from SCADL and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to present actionable recommendations. These included enhancing the user-friendliness of the SCADL Dashboard, incorporating monsoon-specific data, and improving the region-based analysis of complaints. Additionally, Sam contributed to the second phase of the project by proposing new dashboard features and facilitating stakeholder interviews to understand user needs better.
Potential Impact
Alan Sam's work has set the stage for significant improvements in Ahmedabad's monsoon preparedness. His recommendations, if implemented, could lead to a more efficient and responsive grievance redressal system, potentially reducing service disruption during the monsoon season by 15-20% (approx.). Moreover, the enhanced SCADL Dashboard will provide AMC officials with better tools to monitor and address citizen complaints, ultimately improving the overall quality of municipal services.
