Goals

Colgate-Palmolive Company is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions across its entire value chain by 2040, and energy efficiency plays a critical role in its strategy to reduce emissions to zero. The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and Digital & Analysis(D&A) departments are collaborating to develop an effective energy management system to monitor and manage energy consumption. They have assigned Xiaotian Shao the responsibility of accurately calculating electricity usage to identify potential opportunities for electricity savings.

Solutions

Xiaotian approached the challenge using a three-part process: 1. Data Integration: Xiaotian consolidated electricity usage and production volume data from various sources into a central database, applying both existing and updated separation protocols to calculate consumption and output for different segments (departments, areas, production lines) across various time frames (monthly, daily, per shift). 2. Data Visualization: Xiaotian integrated compressed air production and production line yield data with electricity usage to evaluate the electrical efficiency of machinery over time, emphasizing daily efficiency. Xiaotian created a data dashboard to visually depict these efficiency patterns. 3. Anomaly Alert: Xiaotian implemented criteria for detecting unusual efficiency spikes, setting up an automated alert system to notify teams instantly, enabling quick investigation and exploitation of energy-saving opportunities.

Xiaotian's system has empowered Colgate to quickly spot and respond to irregularities in electricity consumption, leading to improved energy efficiency and cost savings. By automating data collection and analysis, it reduces the workload on employees, freeing them for more strategic roles.
