Summary

Jiulong Song researched multiple technological pathways for reducing emissions in road freight transport, with zero-emission heavy-duty trucks as the focus, to support fleet green transformation and transport decarbonization of Decathlon.

Goals

Decathlon has announced its sustainability goal: 20% lower absolute CO2 emissions by 2026 (compared to emissions measured in 2021) and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by 2050. To reach this goal, Decathlon enlisted Jiulong to research how road freight transport decarbonizes and identify strategies and solutions for applying zero-emission heavy-duty trucks in their fleet.

Solutions

Jiulong approached the project in 3 pillars: -Analyzed and compared multiple technological pathways for reducing emissions in road freight transport (alternative fuels and advanced vehicles) -Focused on a credible long-term pathway- "Zero-emission Vehicle (Truck)" and completed a comprehensive analysis of it from five aspects: technology type, market development, OEMs & products, policy incentives, and benchmark research. -Discussed more emission reduction technologies (existing and promising technology) to enhance road freight efficiency of the Decathlon fleet.

Potential Impact

Jiulong completed the zero-emission truck scheme which identified potential carbon emission reduction benefits of more than 4100 tons/year, and cost savings of more than 8 million yuan (5 years of operation) for fleet green transformation. Furthermore, he developed a 250-page research report to guide the Decathlon China Logistics team towards sustainable development. This project will contribute to the adoption of zero-emission trucks and road freight transport decarbonization of the Decathlon fleet.
