Summary

Xiao Zhao designed an interactive visual Tableau tool to help Decathlon with CBAM-related work.

Goals

The primary goal of Xiao Zhao's fellowship at Decathlon was to address the multifaceted challenges posed by the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on the company's global supply chain. This includes developing strategic insights and actionable recommendations to ensure Decathlon's compliance with these emerging international carbon reduction policies, while simultaneously maintaining its competitive edge in the global market.

Solutions

Reviewed CBAM policies, covering the implementation timeline, product carbon emissions, and reporting procedures. Conducted site visits to Decathlon's top five suppliers by CBAM volume and provided training on CBAM concepts, carbon emission calculations, and official form completion. Used Tableau Prep to clean and analyze Decathlon's import data, assessing CBAM scope, costs, and impacts. Summarized existing CBAM work experiences and relevant data to propose short- to long-term actions. Additionally, developed an interactive Tableau tool to support these efforts, featuring capabilities such as displaying estimated CBAM costs by region, process, supplier, and product, identifying the relationship between their suppliers' products and CBAM, and comparing real data with EU default values, and analyzing carbon emission differences among similar products from different suppliers, facilitating long-term CBAM cost management. The tool is now in use and has been improved based on feedback from various teams. Compiled reports on future CBAM developments, including carbon pricing, other countries' carbon tariffs, and relevant Chinese carbon policies.

Potential Impact

- Clarified the scope and impact of CBAM costs, and outlined the necessary steps for Decathlon's CBAM implementation. - Designed a Tableau tool that assists six process teams in efficiently managing CBAM data collection and reporting for 63 suppliers, resulting in approximately 250 work hours saved. - Additionally, the Tableau tool functions as a long-term CBAM database, allowing for the cleaning and analysis of updated data. The tool's data visualization pages provide an effective analytical resource, offering ongoing support for teams in managing CBAM costs.
