Summary
Ifunanya developed a roadmap to help Forsyth County to transition its medium and heavy-duty fleet in the short to medium term.
Goals
Forsyth County is the fourth largest county in North Carolina by population. In December 2019, the Board of Commissioners passed a resolution with goals and a commitment to transition away from dependence on energy derived from fossil fuels. Instead, they aim to increase utilization of energy from clean and renewable sources to the maximum extent possible by 2050, including electrification of their motor pool fleet.
Forsyth County enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Ifunanya Akaolisa to Identify areas within its fleet that could reduce GHG emissions, critical infrastructure required and evaluated the key financial metrics of the proposed investment.
Solutions
Akaolisa analyzed large fleet data using Python and Excel to help the county identify the fleet mix and vehicles primed for transition. She also analyzed replacement strategies to obtain the lowest cost of ownership and recommended the optimum plan to the county.
