Summary

Courage worked with the Data and Software Climate Solutions Team under Climate Operations at Google to accelerate clean energy development. The project focused on aggregating critical datasets and making them publicly accessible through Google's tools, supporting the growth of clean energy capacity.

Goals

Google aims to support the growth of clean energy capacity through its tools by making datasets and layers public. This initiative seeks to leverage Google's extensive data and software capabilities to facilitate the development and deployment of renewable energy projects. The project specifically targets the identification, aggregation, and dissemination of key datasets necessary for clean energy development, ultimately contributing to global renewable energy goals by providing accessible, high-quality data for developers and stakeholders.

Solutions

To achieve these goals, three important steps were completed: 1. Research and Cataloging: Researched critical datasets for utility-scale solar and wind developers and cataloged these datasets, along with important metadata, into an internal Google spreadsheet. 2. Data Importation: Sourced, Imported, and organized publicly available datasets into Cloud Storage. 3. Data Processing and Accessibility: Processed datasets so they are compatible with Google platforms and integrated them into an Earth Engine project. Built an Earth Engine App to make these datasets publicly and easily accessible.

Potential Impact

The datasets will continue to be used to improve Google's products for clean energy developers. They will be included in products that are already widely used by utility-scale developers, like Earth and Earth Engine. This effort aligns with Google's mission to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.
