Summary

Chidi assessed the Advanced Clean Fleet (ACF) rule under CARB and SCAQMD regulations and its impact on Iron Mountain's California fleet, leading to the development of an EV Transition Plan for the next 3 to 10 years. This plan involved evaluating fleet operations, determining the feasibility of electrifying the fleet and ensuring compliance with ACF regulatory requirements from 2025 through 2042.

Goals

Iron Mountain plans to develop a comprehensive EV transition plan for its California fleet, ensuring alignment with CARB and SCAQMD regulations under the Advanced Clean Fleet (ACF) framework. Chidi was enlisted to assess these regulations, analyze the impacts on timing and cost implications for Iron Mountain's fleet, and help develop an EV Transition Plan for the next 3-5 years based on the analysis.

Solutions

Based on the pathways outlined in CARB's Advanced Clean Fleet (ACF) Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Regulations, Iron Mountain's fleet composition was categorized by body type, falling under Group 1 and Group 2. The ZEV Milestones Groups pathway emerged as the most suitable option for Iron Mountain's California fleet. This approach effectively outlines the necessary milestones for fleet electrification and includes a detailed analysis of the percentage of vehicles required to comply with the regulations from 2025 through 2042. This plan ensures that Iron Mountain's fleet aligns with regulatory requirements while strategically transitioning to zero-emission vehicles, supporting Iron Mountain's 2040 Net Zero Sustainability goal.

Potential Impact

Chidi used the AFLEET and DRVE tools to determine metrics for retiring the old fleet and replacing it with zero-emission vehicles. Chidi also used the CARB calculator to determine the percentage of the fleet that needs to transition to EVs, based on the ACF ZEV Milestone Groups Pathways and the annual percentage requirements. For electric vehicles and infrastructure deployment, Chidi recommended various models of available electric vehicles and charging infrastructure for replacement and adoption. Based on the results of the analysis, Chidi developed an EV transition plan and made recommendations for its implementation to help meet CARB's ACF regulations as well as Iron Mountain's 2040 Net Zero Sustainability goals.
