Summary
Luxuan Sun measured the carbon footprint of Kingfisher's products and examined the company's carbon abatement potential.
Goals
The Kingfisher Group's carbon abatement target is to achieve a 6% reduction in key suppliers and materials relative to turnover by 2025 (from the 2017/18 baseline level), with a focus on the carbon-intensive materials in the supply chain (peat, cement, ceramics and plastic products). In the case of plastic products, Kingfisher Group aims to achieve a 7% reduction in emissions. The use of recycled plastics is an important way to reduce carbon emissions from plastic products. It is therefore important to explore the carbon abatement potential of Kingfisher's recycled plastic products.
Solutions
Taking sprinklers as an example, the project calculated the lifecycle carbon footprint of products using recycled plastics based on the specialist software Efootprint and Gabi for lifecycle analysis, and compared it with the original version. Based on this, carbon emission factors were also calculated for additional types of recycled plastics based on actual plant data, bridging the data gap in this area in China. In addition, the carbon abatement potential of Kingfisher's plastic products was further investigated, based on which Kingfisher can calculate the carbon footprint of other green products to better achieve its carbon abatement targets.
Potential Impact
Calculation results showed that Sprinklers made from recycled PP and ABS could reduce CO2e by approximately 10% compared to with the original version. In addition, Kingfisher can also calculate the carbon footprint of other products to help achieve carbon abatement targets.
