Summary

Diana helped design an Energy Efficiency Scorecard tailored for industrial manufacturing portfolio companies, and supported the development of a tool to help portfolio companies evaluate exposure to extreme weather and natural hazards and identify potential measures that could be implemented to practically mitigate risks.

Goals

Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co, a leading global investment firm with over $500 billion in assets under management, engaged Climate Corps Fellow Diana Goswami to help design a scorecard that could support industrial manufacturing sites in identifying common energy efficiency and cost-saving opportunities. She also helped develop a robust, yet efficient methodology to help companies manage physical climate risk by identifying potential exposure and evaluating mitigation measures at potentially at-risk sites.

Solutions

Diana worked with the KKR team to support the development of an Excel-based Energy Efficiency Scorecard. This work resulted in the following: - Template for tracking energy consumption and costs to identify target areas and monitor progress. - Proposed low-cost, high-impact energy-saving opportunities with estimated savings and costs for each. - Template for planning future improvements and estimating financial impact and savings. She also supported the development of an Excel-based Physical Climate Risk Tool for portfolio companies. This work resulted in the following: - Risk heat maps that flag potentially higher-risk sites. - Recommendations for operational and physical risk management practices. - Templates for planning climate risk management initiatives and estimating costs to pursue each initiative.

Potential Impact

The solutions proposed in the energy efficiency scorecard could potentially drive energy cost savings and reduce GHG emissions in industrial manufacturing facilities. The physical climate risk tool can help better enable portfolio companies to enhance resilience to physical climate risks.
