Summary
Lucia Castellares developed a climate action tool to identify and implement dairy emissions reduction strategies, supporting the achievement of FLAG targets.
Goals
McDonald’s, the world’s leading foodservice retailer with over 40,000 locations in more than 100 countries, serves millions of customers daily. Recognizing the importance of reducing supply chain emissions to meet their targets, it engaged Lucia Castellares to develop a climate action plan for dairy products in priority markets.
Solutions
Lucia’s work felt into three categories:
1) Best practices research: Lucia collaborated with internal experts and external partners to identify best practices in the food industry for reducing dairy emissions. She identified improvement opportunities for McDonald’s projects on topics such as regenerative agriculture, enteric methane and manure management.
2) Tool creation: Lucia created a comprehensive assessment framework that empowered key markets to evaluate and rank dairy emissions reduction strategies. The tool was tailored to their unique contexts, ensuring that each market could effectively contribute to the overall climate goals.
3) Partnership selection: Based on her findings, Lucia recommended organizations that align with McDonald’s priorities and can enhance its dairy supply chain resiliency.
Potential Impact
By continuing to leverage Castellares’ work, McDonald’s aims to significantly improve its ability to evaluate and identify high-impact projects in priority markets. McDonald's believes this tool will not only streamline decision-making processes but also enable a more strategic and targeted approach to securing funding opportunities and forming valuable partnerships. As a result, McDonald’s will continue to work towards reducing its emissions, optimizing resource allocation, and driving more sustainable growth.
