Summary
Nandita found means for reducing emissions from the dairy, tea, and cocoa farms of Nestlé India, while promoting sustainable farm level practices.
Goals
- For Fresh Milk, identification of nutritious fodder for cattle with carbon sequestration capacities, applications, and recommendations for Bio Digesters and other technical innovations for better farm management. Usage of solar and biofuel alternatives with a study of past success stories in the field.
- For Tea and Cocoa, the sources and sinks of emissions to be identified for cradle to farm gate level followed by the calculation of emission. The means of carbon sequestration to be explored with recommendations of practices for reduction in emissions.
Solutions
- For Fresh Milk, vendors across the country were contacted to learn about the types of bio-digesters and other technologies used in Indian dairy farms and to understand their respective benefits. Technical innovations happening round the world were explored via secondary research. The cost-benefit analysis for all the recommendations was done on MS Excel.
- For Tea and Cocoa the primary data was collected over phone calls and the data was divided into that of Nestlé and non-Nestlé farm. The calculations were done by using calculators by US EPA & IPCC for different types of emissions and their comparison along with recommended changes was shown. The carbon sequestration capacity of various shade trees was calculated on MS Excel.
Potential Impact
- For Fresh Milk, energy consumptions by few Nestle dairy farms were computed. Installation of Biodigester (with genset for electricity production) recommended which can significantly reduce GHG emissions. Other technologies recommended will improve animal health (reducing spending on medicines) and improve soil quality (reducing spending on inorganic fertilizers and their emissions).
- For Tea, there could be a reduction in emissions after adopting bio-fertilization technology.
- For Cocoa, the minimum emission scenario is found to be the one where it is planted with annuals, in this case 100% utilization of plantation is being done by Nestlé.
