Summary
Amelia Brinkerhoff worked with Partners Group to create its scalable approach to climate risk assessment and management across the investment portfolio and helped operationalize Partners Group's climate change strategy.
Goals
Partners Group is a global private markets investment manager with a strong commitment to responsible investing on behalf of its clients. Partners Group enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Amelia Brinkerhoff to contribute to the operationalization of their climate change strategy. Brinkerhoff's mandate was to first offer an assessment of Partners Group's direct lead equity and infrastructure portfolios for climate risks and opportunities. From there, her aim was to work with Partners Group to create a scalable approach to addressing these climate-related risks and opportunities, which the team calls a "climate change Sweep". Brinkerhoff was also tasked with further enhancing Partners Group's greenhouse-gas inventory & reporting approach and, alongside the firm's ESG & Sustainability team, creating climate-related investment guidelines for investment teams.
Solutions
Brinkerhoff helped Partners Group in developing its methodology to assess climate-related risks and opportunities in the portfolio by using SASB industry data, physical risk indicators, and the emissions profile of the company. Brinkerhoff then aided the team in developing a comprehensive, scalable and repeatable approach to addressing climate risks and opportunities across the portfolio and led the process to find an external provider to implement this approach.
As a step to enhance Partners Group's greenhouse-gas inventory & reporting approach, Brinkerhoff integrated considerations from the Science-based-Target initiative and from the Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures. She also worked on an Inventory Management Plan with an aim to streamline processes for data collection and analysis.
Impact
The climate change sweep will be scaled across Partners Group's portfolio, so that every asset for which climate change presents a material risk or opportunity has a company-specific action plan to address them. Brinkerhoff's tools and recommendations build on Partners Group's processes, providing a clear plan to assess and manage climate risks and opportunities across its investments. Her project also helps to identify and prioritize climate engagements such as emissions reduction, energy efficiency and climate resilience projects in its investment portfolio.
