Summary
Namit Jhanwar created an energy map to help Pharmavite establish future reduction goals and identified opportunities for energy efficiency projects.
Goals
EDF Climate Corps fellow Namit Jhanwar was brought onboard Pharmavite’s Energy team to identify opportunities for potential energy efficiency projects, as well as evaluate current energy use and trends within its manufacturing facilities. The company wanted to meet cost savings and GHG emissions reductions, but first needed to establish a baseline of its energy use.
Solutions
Namit worked with the energy champion at Opelika to develop an energy map that shows real time consumption of manufacturing equipment within the plant. The map included data loggers on all major manufacturing equipment, which helps Pharmavite understand the amount of energy needed to run both the utilities, as well as the specific manufacturing processes for products, such as Gummies, Tablets and SoftGel. This data was used to identify top energy-users and to set reduction goals in Opelika. Namit also identified the potential for energy efficiency projects around LED lighting retrofits and on-site Ground Mounted Solar system installations.
Potential Impact
The recommended energy efficiency projects have the potential to save 8,174,613 kilowatt hours, equivalent to 5745 tons of carbon dioxide. Overall, Namit’s projects helped Pharmavite better understand its energy use, aid its efforts to increase energy efficiency in its operations and explore the opportunities presented by clean energy projects.
