Sophie Rodgers supported Sodexo's 2024 scope 1 and 2 carbon accounting to track progress against their SBTI validated carbon reduction commitments.
Goals
Sodexo, a global leader in sustainable food, provides food service and facilities management expertise to more than 1,600 clients every day, powered by 104,000 employees across the United States and 430,000 globally. Aligned with their 34% carbon emissions reduction by 2025 and Net Zero emissions by 2040, Sodexo North America engaged EDF Climate Corps Fellow, Sophie Rodgers, to support the 2024 Scope 1 and 2 carbon footprint performance analysis as part of their annual sustainability reporting work.
Solutions
Sophie supported Sodexo's sustainability and CSR work in three main ways:
- Performance analytics: Sophie contributed to Sodexo's 2024 carbon accounting process by validating and calculating scope 1 and 2 data and defending analysis with external auditors.
- Renewable energy purchasing: To support renewable energy purchasing, Sophie worked with a global environmental commodities trading firm to explore purchasing options to drive emissionality.
- Competitive analysis: To help identify Sodexo's sustainability commitments and progress against their peers, Sophie updated their competitor benchmark.
Potential Impact
- Performance analytics: Sophie's scope 1 and 2 calculations will be used for reporting and tracking against external commitments. To improve next year's data collection process, Sophie created a toolkit to help site managers better report their scope 2 data.
- Renewable energy purchasing: Sophie's research set Sodexo US up for success to continue purchasing 100% renewable energy and positively impact cleaning up one of the US's dirtiest grids.
- Competitive analysis: The updated competitor benchmark Sophie completed will be presented and used by the sales team to showcase Sodexo's sustainability leadership.
