Summary

Shih-Hsuan (Ina) worked with S&P Global to develop an internal carbon pricing strategy and conduct a nature risk profile across its top suppliers.

Goals

S&P Global has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040 and partnered with international market leaders to develop frameworks and targets for natural capital. With the goal of exploring best practices needed to embed low-carbon practices into its operation, S&P Global brought on Ina to develop an internal carbon pricing strategy and nature risk profile to achieve the reduction targets and enhance sustainable procurement practices.

Solutions

Ina approached the projects in three phases:

  1. Analyze carbon and ecosystem footprint – Ina engaged with internal stakeholders to analyze S&P Global scope 1 and 2 emissions from operations and scope 3 emissions from business travel and procurement. She also leveraged in-house research tools to analyze S&P Global’s dependencies and impacts on nature through its direct operations.
  2. Establish the benchmark – Ina conducted benchmarking and scenario analysis to estimate the costs of carbon for S&P Global and identify potential barriers to implementing the program with business travel, procurement, and real estate, respectively. She also benchmarked S&P Global’s nature-related disclosure against peers and voluntary frameworks to identify which nature-related risks should be prioritized.
  3. Build the roadmap – Ina developed a roadmap to implement internal carbon pricing to limit emissions from business travel and defined unique identifiers to streamline suppliers' data integration with ESG and nature-related risks.

Potential Impact

S&P Global plans to expand and deepen its sustainability efforts by introducing internal carbon pricing and refining its nature target setting. Ina’s strategy and recommendations will create opportunities for S&P Global to raise internal awareness and dialogue about the environmental implications of GHG reduction initiatives.

In addition to streamlining the vendor management system, her work will assist S&P Global in achieving long-term initiatives toward responsible sourcing practices that consider climate and other sustainability impacts.
