Summary

Kevin Ruuhela worked with Avaya to establish where its future opportunities stand in regards to reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

Goals

Kevin Ruuhela worked with Avaya Inc. to conduct research to establish where its future opportunities stand in regards to reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as to provide recommendations on how to continue the organization’s drive to reduce its carbon footprint.

Solutions

Ruuhela worked across Avaya’s global organization, evaluating data centers, research laboratories, office locations and the product supply chain to identify opportunities for further reductions. From this evaluation, Ruuhela developed key recommendations for implementing global PC power management, installing vending machine misers and tracking Scope 3 emissions information along with many other suggestions.

While researching Avaya’s current efforts for energy efficiency, he was able to identify a number of utility provider rebates for projects already underway that are expected to result in savings for the company. In addition, Ruuhela enhanced Avaya’s Green Lease program elements and helped to implement a pilot. This program is designed to work with property owners to overcome the split-incentive barrier and to facilitate pursuing future energy efficiency projects at Avaya’s leased locations.

Potential Impact

Overall during his summer internship, Ruuhela identified new energy conservation opportunities and cost savings that are expected to provide long term value for Avaya.
