Summary

Pinandito Wisambudi partnered with Chemonics International to enhance its sustainability strategy by strengthening its GHG inventory, establishing Science-Based Targets (SBTs), and providing foundational analysis for developing a decarbonization roadmap.

Goals

Chemonics International, a global development consulting firm, aimed to align its operations with global climate goals while improving the accuracy of its emissions tracking. To address this, Chemonics enlisted Pinandito Wisambudi, a Climate Corps Fellow from Johns Hopkins University, to strengthen its GHG inventory, establish SBTs, and lay the groundwork for a comprehensive decarbonization roadmap.

Solutions

Pinandito responded to the challenge by using a four-phase approach: 1. Strengthen GHG inventories: Addressed gaps in data and methodology and ensured alignment with the GHG Protocol and Chemonics' global operations. Pinandito spearheaded three main activities, including clarifying operational boundaries, resolving inconsistencies in the scope 3 emissions calculation, and developing a GHG Inventory Methodology Guidance Document. These efforts resulted in a more accurate, comprehensive, and comparable GHG inventory. 2. Establish near-term and long-term SBTs: Modelled multiple emissions reduction scenarios aligned with the Science-Based Target initiatives criteria to identify the most suitable near- and long-term emissions reduction targets for Chemonics. 3. Analyze emissions interventions and supplier engagement initiatives: Identified key emissions reduction interventions for Chemonics. He also developed a roadmap for engaging suppliers and identified activities responsible for the majority of Scope 3 emissions despite data challenges. 4. Decarbonization roadmap: Pinandito provided foundational analysis for Chemonics' decarbonization roadmap, including outlining key processes such as calculating business-as-usual projections and consolidating the previous three phases.

Potential Impact

Pinandito's efforts have significantly enhanced Chemonics' ability to achieve its sustainability goals. By strengthening the GHG inventory, he ensured more accurate emissions tracking, which serves as the foundation for all future sustainability initiatives. The establishment of near-term and long-term SBTs provided Chemonics with clear and actionable goals, aligning the company's efforts with global climate objectives. His analysis of emissions interventions and supplier engagement initiatives identified key opportunities for substantial Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions reductions. The foundational analysis for the decarbonization roadmap consolidated these efforts, offering a structured pathway for Chemonics to reduce its GHG emissions systematically.
