Summary
Kangbo Chang analyzed Emerson Climate Technologies Suzhou’s operations and offered cost-effective solutions toward improving the energy efficiency of their air compressor systems.
Goals
Emerson Climate Technologies Suzhou, a company that manufactures motors and compressors in China, enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Kangbo Chang to help reduce the electricity consumption of their air compressor system to further cost savings in one of its plants.
Solutions
After analyzing the operation data of all air compressors and interviewing the facilities manager, Chang determined that the energy efficiency of the equipment was low due to its age. He initiated the replacement of the least efficient unit with a new VSD air compressor.
He also discovered leak holes in production lines which cause massive energy waste. He recommended installing air pressure regulators for the facilities’ air blow guns and compose a leakage checklist for all equipment that employs the use of high pressure air. Finally, Chang created an evaluation tool that would monitor the energy saving potential for the system as well as an energy management maturity model.
Potential Impact
If implemented, Chang’s projects could save Emerson Climate Technologies 1,084,900 kilowatt hours of electricity.
