Summary
As a Sustainability Program Manager on the Supplier Responsibility team at Google via Adecco, Pranav Bhardwaj developed a method to assess the climate risk assessment that integrates current regional climate risk data with forecasted impacts.
Goals
Google, Inc. is one of the largest technology companies in the world and has placed sustainability at the forefront of the company's mission. As the severity of climate-related events intensifies, it is important to build our understanding of how physical risks can disrupt the supply chain. The main goal of this project is to create a science-based framework for assessing potential future supply chain climate risk by leveraging existing internal data, and researching external databases.
Solutions
To address this issue, Pranav reviewed technical guidance from the Task Force for Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and the United Nations SENDAI Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. One of the challenges of the project was the lack of industry-specific guidance or supply chain guidance. To address this, Pranav worked with the Enterprise Risk Management and Supplier Responsibility teams to create a 5-step process for identifying, analyzing, and responding to climate risks. These steps are:
1. Identifying and prioritizing the physical climate risks affecting Google's supply chains.
2. Leveraging environmental and climate data collected from suppliers.
3. Conducting a scenario analysis for top suppliers on various geographic scales and time horizons.
4. Adapting and mitigating high-impact risks, within Google and with suppliers.
5. Monitoring future risks, benchmarking, and automating the assessment process.
Potential Impact
This assessment will help Google gain visibility into potential future climate change risks in its supply chain through the integration of international climate data with supply chain data. By creating adaptive capacity and mitigating future risks, the financial savings to suppliers could be significant. The Global Capacity Delivery teams will benefit from this analysis, by strengthening their ability to engage with suppliers, and to build supply chain resilience. This framework has the capability of automation in the future, further contributing to Google’s mission of organizing the world’s data in an accessible and practical manner.
