Summary
Xin Tong identified energy efficiency improvements at Legrand’s manufacturing facility, Rocom.
Goals
Rocom, a manufacturing facility of Legrand, operates with more than 2,000 employees in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province of China. As a pioneer of energy saving, Rocom set a target to reduce energy use by 3% every year since 2002. Rocom enlisted EDF Climate Corps fellow Xin Tong to work on energy saving projects and conduct environmental training for employees for improving their environmental awareness and knowledge about the environmental practice.
Solutions
After collecting and analyzing Rocom’s energy use, as well as interviewing staff, Tong identified the energy saving opportunities in upgrading the compressed air system, Tong also discovered that HVAC consumption makes up 16% of total energy use. Rocom currently used black fabric to cover the roof to reduce the temperature of the ceiling, so Tong suggested installing a shield to prevent sun light shine on the window. To increase the overall effectiveness, he also recommended installing smart switches in some places to reduce ineffective and redundant lighting.
Potential Impact
Over their lifetimes, Tong's projects could save Rocom Legrand $907.0 thousand in net operational costs. Annually, they could save 83.31 thousand kilowatt hours of electricity, 1,440 tons of tap water and 688.9 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Plans have been made to reform the air compressor system, install the smart switches and insulation devices. With these projects, Rocom Legrand will be better positioned to accomplish its energy consumption reduction goal.
