Summary

Koh conducted a material flow and cost-benefit analysis of end-of-life photovoltaic (EoL PV) modules to support LONGi Solar's circular economy goals.

Goals

The primary goal of this study is to assist LONGi in developing a comprehensive recycling strategy for end-of-life photovoltaic (EoL PV) modules. This includes enhancing material recovery, reducing environmental impacts, and supporting China's broader carbon neutrality and circular economy objectives. The study aims to identify economically viable recycling methods that can maximize resource efficiency while minimizing waste and emissions, contributing to the sustainable growth of LONGi and the PV industry in China.

Solutions

During the study, several challenges were encountered, including the high energy consumption and carbon emissions associated with advanced recycling processes, uncertainty in the economic viability of less advanced recycling methods, and the potential environmental risks from improper waste management. To overcome these obstacles, a hybrid recycling model combining medium and advanced processes was proposed. This approach balances material recovery, cost-efficiency, and environmental impact, ensuring a practical and scalable solution. Additionally, the study recommends aligning recycling practices with the ongoing transition to renewable energy, which could offset the carbon footprint of the recycling process.

Potential Impact

The study's findings can significantly impact LONGi by providing a roadmap for implementing sustainable EoL PV module recycling practices. By adopting the recommended strategies, LONGi can enhance its leadership in the PV industry, support China's dual carbon goals, and contribute to reducing the environmental impact of the rapidly growing PV waste stream. The study also positions LONGi to capitalize on future market opportunities in the recycling sector, promoting a circular economy within China's PV industry.
