Summary

Ke Tang helped develop an energy-saving roadmap for McDonald's China to achieve its energy-saving target by 2022 through onsite energy audits and energy management of the IoT system.

Goals

McDonald's China is committed to advancing its “Scale for Good” initiative on sustainable development and to building more “Green Restaurants” in the country. McDonald's China enlisted Ke Tang to help them identify energy-saving opportunities through onsite energy audits and help plan strategic energy-saving roadmaps for the next 5-10 years to achieve the company’s goal in saving energy by 11% by 2022.

Solutions

After collecting the energy consumption data of key equipment through the IoT system, Tang communicated with McDonald’s China staff through on-site survey and compared the time points of abnormal data. She further identified very cost-effective energy-saving opportunities in smart behavior management, of which the effectiveness and success heavily rely on the real-time data monitoring and automation of the IoT system. To ensure the safety and success of these opportunities, Tang also pointed out the importance of staff permission to the IoT system to McDonald’s China, after her extensive communication with technicians and construction department of the company.

In addition, Tang proposed energy-saving recommendations on HVAC and lighting systems to increase both energy savings and customer comfort, based on energy data analysis of different types of McDonald’s restaurants in China

Potential Impact

If the strategic roadmap Tang propose to McDonald’s China could be successfully implemented nationwide in 2020, the company could save 72 million kWh of electricity and avoid 50,618 metric tons of CO2 emissions in total.
