Summary
Ruiyang Li helped LONGi Group further improve a GHG Emission Calculator tool and quantified the total emissions in 2019.
Goals
As the world’s largest manufacture of solar monocrystalline silicon photovoltaic products, LONGi Group strives to make low-cost clean energy for the world and practices the concept of clean production and green manufacturing. To better disclose its environmental information, LONGi enlisted Ruiyang Li to analyze company-wide carbon accounting methodologies, complete CDP’s climate change questionnaire and draft an emission reduction strategy.
Solutions
Ruiyang approached the challenge by dividing it into several steps:
-
Defined the GHG organizational boundary by using the equity share approach to consolidate LONGi’s facility-level GHG emissions, including 29 factories’ operation and production process investigated within the boundary.
-
Identified 10 GHG emissions sources of scope 1 and scope 2 by conducting in-depth research on the manufacturing process, with 6 types of greenhouse gas including CO2, CH4, N2O, HFCs, PFCs and SF6 being taken into account. Carbon offset such as using hydropower instead of fossil fuel as electricity sources was also included into the inventory.
-
Improved a calculator tool to quantify the GHG emissions for LONGi. A new quantitative approach and the list of the data categories for each emission source were added to this tool referring to IPCC AR5 and the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC)’s Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard.
-
Collected data from all 27 factories, and GHG emissions reduction opportunities were identified from the analysis of the basic emission rules according to the initial result.
-
Completed CDP’s climate change questionnaire by combining with the initial result of carbon accounting and LONGi’s climate management procedure, as well as their identification on potential environmental risks and opportunities.
Impact
Each year, LONGi Group could use the GHG Emission Calculator Tool that has been improved by Ruiyang Li to collect GHG emission data and calculate the total emissions with more user-friendly factor updates. This could facilitate LONGi to conduct company-wide carbon accounting inventory and analyze the effectiveness of their GHG emissions reduction strategy and adjust their reduction target accordingly.
