Summary
Emily developed a strategic framework and roadmap for Tiffany & Co.’s biodiversity agenda in alignment with the Science Based Targets for Nature framework.
Goals
Tiffany & Co. has a long history of supporting conservation and believes it has a vital role to play in the protection of critical landscapes and preservation of natural ecosystems. The company is committed to protecting and restoring nature, to support global biodiversity preservation and build upon its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 in line with the Science Based Targets Initiative. Tiffany enlisted a Climate Corps Fellow to support identifying key areas of opportunity for the company to address biodiversity impacts in alignment with the Science Based Targets for Nature framework.
Solutions
Working with Tiffany & Co.’s Global Sustainability Team, Emily initiated a three-pronged approach in supporting the development of Tiffany’s biodiversity strategy:
-
Conducted landscape analysis of Tiffany’s existing and legacy investments in biodiversity and peer luxury company commitments in the biodiversity space
-
Researched biodiversity frameworks for how companies can scientifically address their impacts and dependencies on nature, leveraging the landscape analysis and research on best-in-class guidance frameworks.
- Developed Biodiversity Strategy for Tiffany & Co. in line with the Science Based Targets for Nature (SBTN) guidance, including a business case for investing in biodiversity. Emily calculated Tiffany’s biodiversity impact footprint, identified key areas of opportunities, proposed quantitative targets, and developed a roadmap for implementation based on the ARRT (avoid, reduce, restore, regenerate, transform) guiding principles detailed by SBTN.
Potential Impact
Emily’s research and analysis will enable Tiffany & Co. to launch a comprehensive biodiversity strategy in line with the Science Based Targets for Nature framework. This biodiversity strategy builds upon Tiffany’s commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 in line with the Science Based Targets Initiative Net-Zero Standard.
Emily’s quantification of Tiffany & Co.’s biodiversity footprint will establish a baseline for the company to set targets against, allowing Tiffany to continue to grow and amplify its legacy of business practices that have supported biodiversity. Her recommendations will enable Tiffany to endeavor to prioritize the planet in critical business decisions and invest in nature-based solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect biodiversity, and empower communities.
