Summary

The goal of this project was to calculate the carbon footprint of Mahindra Lifespaces and identify strategies to minimize it.

Goals

This project aimed to estimate the carbon footprints of two MLDL buildings, identify the most significant carbon contributors in these projects, and identify near and long-term strategies that would reduce future projects' carbon footprints. An additional objective was to identify alternative materials as a substitute for the existing materials to reduce the carbon footprint of future projects.

Solutions

Alternative materials were considered using carbon negative agro-based masonry and bio panels to substitute the gypsum paneling and cement based masonry such as AAC and CMU blocks. The substitution of solid slabs with hollow core slabs reduces the structure's weight and, as a result, reduces the carbon footprint of the projects. Strategies such as identifying sites with good soil conditions, reducing basement size or avoiding it, and optimizing building shape and structure were identified to reduce the carbon footprint further.

Potential Impact

The two considered case studies identified alternative materials and strategies with a carbon reduction potential of 8973.2 Tonnes. Strategies to further reduce the carbon footprint were identified, and their impact was estimated. The design teams were also engaged in sensitizing the potential of alternative materials as a substitute to existing materials to reduce the carbon footprint of their future projects.
