Summary
Mariana Souza helped Baxter evaluate its new emissions reductions goals.
Goals
Having managed sustainability since the 1990s, Baxter International Inc. already had a strong framework for energy management and reducing greenhouse gas emissions when it began developing its draft 2015-2020 sustainability goals. Baxter brought in EDF Climate Corps fellow, Mariana Souza, to help in evaluating whether its proposed energy efficiency, renewable energy and greenhouse gas emissions goals could be made more aggressive. The fellow was asked to assess the proposed goals from the perspective of existing greenhouse gas management mechanisms and industry trends in targets, tools and green financing.
Solutions
When she began her fellowship, Souza mapped out an organizational chart of Baxter employees who would ultimately contribute to achieving absolute reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Then, over the course of her summer fellowship, she identified key areas for improvement in financing energy management and facilitating opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across Baxter’s global operations.
Potential Impact
Souza provided a number of scenarios, the most aggressive of which would allow Baxter to achieve dramatically more absolute greenhouse gas reductions and tens of millions of dollars in energy savings. With these recommendations, the business is poised to strengthen its position as an environmental leader by ensuring sufficient allocation of resources and identification of high-impact projects.
