Summary
Celia Bravard collaborated with PepsiCo’s Global Sustainability Office to build a metric-driven, integrated, repeatable value chain engagement strategy to advance their ambitious sustainability agenda.
Goals
In January 2021, PepsiCo more than doubled its science-based climate goal, targeting a reduction of absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its value chain by more than 40% by 2030. In addition, the company has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, one decade earlier than called for in the Paris Agreement. PepsiCo Global Office of Sustainability enlisted EDF Climate Corps Fellow Celia Bravard to plan engagement summits and build out value chain engagement strategies across a variety of stakeholders.
Solutions
Bravard approached value chain engagement work through the following steps:
- Benchmarked industry best practices and internal value chain engagement activities to identify areas of opportunity for PepsiCo. This work created the foundation for the framework.
- Identified synergies across various sectors and value chain workstreams including segmentation models, engagement criteria, capability building content, data gathering platforms, and year-over-year tracking. This work fostered cross-functional collaboration and streamlined efforts for the teams.
- Built segmentation model and framework for procurement teams to identify key suppliers in PepsiCo’s value chain. The model expanded beyond just spend data, encompassing a multi-criteria approach based on strategic importance and sustainability priority. This work is designed for future and efficient repeatability.
- Outlined data gathering platforms to track annual progress. This work is instrumental in sharing success stories, measuring progress, and reporting externally.
Potential Impact
This year, PepsiCo will host two value chain engagement summits for over 100 partners. Bravard’s segmentation, capability building, and engagement strategy work supported all aspects of the summit, from content planning to final agenda.
In the long-term, leveraging the strategy and tools Bravard developed will result in a streamlined and repeatable engagement process. Standardized methods and metrics will drive the incentivization of partners across the supply chain to take bold sustainability action alongside PepsiCo.
